EDUCATION - focus on literacy
The government of Bangladesh operates schools in the primary, secondary, and higher secondary levels. Education area in Bangladesh is not so developed. Literacy rate is low and there is a significant difference between female and male literacy rates. However, with on going awareness of both the government and NGO's, literacy rate have been going up.
Literacy is important as it is the basis of communication and understanding for many improvement issues such as health and economic development. Bangladesh was awarded an International Literacy Prize in 1998 from UNESCO for its ongoing literacy rate. There are many other NGO's trying to help support the problems of primary education. With such a large population the literacy struggle is on-going. SITUATIONCurrently NGO BRAC has been helping education in Bangladesh for nearly 30 years, with many basic programs being set up all over the country and many others. BRAC has enrolled more than 900,000 students. Their schools are designed to give a second chance at learning to the disadvantaged students left out from the formal education systems. They also open schools in places where formal schools do not, helping disadvantaged kids affected by extreme poverty, violence, displacement or discrimination.
Throughout their history of 30 years they have provided basic education to around 10 million students in Bangladesh, with more than five million graduates from their non-formal primary schools. In the next couple years Government and NGOS want to see the percentage of students attending school and people graduating high school to go on to university go up. |
